PREMIO SAN GIOVANNI PAOLO II

The John Paul II Vatican Foundation announces the inaugural edition of the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II. The award was established on the 7th of February 2023 by a decision of the Administrative Council of the John Paul II Vatican Foundation, in order to honor individuals, organizations or initiatives that, in their scientific, cultural and social activities, make use of the teaching or inspiration of Saint John Paul II and contribute to the promotion of his heritage in the Church and in the world.

The purpose of the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II is to recognize significant achievements, but also to support activities aimed at the deepening of papal teaching, the creative realization of the values supported by Saint John Paul II and the continuation of pastoral projects initiated during the pontificate of Pope Wojtyla. The selection of the laureate is made by the Chapter, consisting of 13 members distinguished by their authority and representing various fields of knowledge and activity of the Church.

On 14. October 2023, the international Chapter of the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II, under the chairmanship of Cardinal Kurt Koch, selected the first laureate. The John Paul II Justice and Peace Center in Kampania (Uganda) became the first laureate of the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II. The John Paul II Justice and Peace Center in Kampala is an organization founded in 2006 on the initiative of seven religious congregations working in Uganda, inspired by the exhortation Ecclesia in Africa (1995). The aim of the John Paul II Justice and Peace Center is the practical promotion of the social doctrine of the Church, especially that taught by the Popes, in particular St John Paul II.

The award ceremony for the Premio San Giovanni Paolo II will take place on 22nd May 2024 at the Vatican and will honor the laureate and highlight the international character of the award.
