Father Stanislaw Dziwisz gives him the last anointing. He realized that John Paul II might not survive. Then, Professor Crucitti proceeds to the operation, which was supposed to take nearly six hours and change the entire world. The conversation I had with him eight years later is one of the most important moments of my life. I knew it would have such an impact even before I went to him to ask what was going on that night when he saved the Pope’s life. I knew that I would ask him a question that could radically change my life; that I would ask him: “Can you really show me a picture that proves God’s existence?” Even before our meeting, Professor Crucitti made it clear to me that, I would have to honor the doctor-patient confidentiality and he will not reveal medical secrets of his patients. However, I did not expect it. (…) In the end, I asked him a question that lay so much on my heart:
– Does that X-ray show that God exists?
He looked at me and pondered, and then once again he made a sketch on a piece of paper of the situation.
– The bullet pierced the Pope’s abdomen and torn apart of the intestines, actually it should have hit the organs and blood vessels relevant to life and health but adopted a very peculiar trajectory.
– Why peculiar?
– It looked as if something invisible changed the direction of the bullet, moved it away from all organs, as if it had made a bend in the body of the Pope, which, after all, is actually impossible.
– Do you want to say that some intangible force has shifted the trajectory of the bullet and that the Pope would have died if the bullet had not had an unspecified obstacle in his body? What was it? A miracle in the Pope’s body?
– I am a doctor, not a theologian, but I know what Pope John Paul II said: “Someone’s hand was shooting, but another hand was leading the bullet.” I think he was right. It was not possible for the bullet to be carried in a zigzag mode. Something changed the direction of its run. Of course, throughout Rome there was a rumor that it was only as a result of the miracle that the Pope was able to survive the assassination.
