St. John Paul II was unveiled during a thanksgiving mass for the pontificate of the Polish Pope. Auxiliary Bishop of the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese and pastor of the Basilica of St. Stefan Gyoergy Snell blessed the statue during a concelebrated mass with the Fr. Krzysztof Grzelak, priest from the Polish personal parish in Budapest and broadcast live on the Internet.

The life-size bronze monument was designed by Hungarian artists, the brothers Laszlo and Norbert Kotorman. John Paul II is depicted with both hands raised in a gesture of blessing.
