The activity of Cardinal Wojtyła was purely religious and evangelical. He tried to awaken in the young conscience, the inner freedom that flows from contact with God and dialogue with him in prayer. Inner life and a strong relationship with God naturally lead to a deeper understanding of social matters, solidarity with others, sensitivity to the suffering, people deprived of their liberty and fundamental rights. This is how the spiritual and moral opposition was born. Karol Wojtyła was not its political leader, but its Shepherd. He preached the gospel principle: “The truth will set you free,” thereby serving human freedom. (…) According to the metropolitan of Krakow, the fight should have been conducted peacefully, with caution, as did Gandhi. Reasonably, it was necessary to find the right arguments, point out the errors of the system, to avoid disregarding and trampling on human rights and the right to freedom. One should not count on the fact that anything can be solved by protest or an armed uprising. During the speech of the metropolitan in Skałka, a plane appeared in the sky, clearly trying to disrupt the meeting. The cardinal gave an ironic greeting to the “uninvited guest,” and then criticized the press for the way it falsified reality. How prophetic his words were! Neither of the newspapers referred to his speech the next day.
