This worry was increasingly taking the thoughts of the Holy Father and his close associates. The Holy See had to do everything in its power to avoid wars in the Middle East and that they would not have even to the slightest extent a religious conflict. Faith in God could not absolutely lead to solving a problem through armed conflict. It would be blasphemy to think otherwise! That is why, in accordance with the spirit of Assisi, it was necessary to do everything necessary to deepen the dialogue between monotheistic religions as well as with other religions.
For the year 2000, John Paul II planned a jubilee pilgrimage in the footsteps of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Paul. It was to be a journey through the beginnings of Christian history, to places where the living God had left his “traces”.
Unfortunately, the permission was not given to start at the first stage, in Your Chaldean, Iraq. The Pope was forced to begin his pilgrimage at the Vatican with a ceremony commemorating Abraham. Naturally, he was sorry that the permission was not given. Even more, that his desire to follow the footsteps of the person who is a common father in faith also for Muslims has not been understood.
