I would like to point out that the Holy Father has never given in to the influence of criticism, especially when they have been the result of prejudice or treated him instrumentally. All his strength he drew from prayer, from his encounter with the Lord. Following in the footsteps of the Gospel, he knew which way to lead the Church: going straight and not looking to the right or the left. He always followed Christ in all things, trying to be a good shepherd for his flock. He was a free man, free internally, which provided him with a sense of peace.
Conservative? Traditionalist?
Such criticisms stemmed from the assumption that the Pope, who came from Poland, could not be different. What an absurd simplification! What a superficial, offensive assessment! And, yet it is true that in some circles in the West the so-called “superiority complex” have taken root. Some believed that there could be nothing good from the East, as second-class citizens live there.
