He tried to fulfill his duty to God, the Church, and the people

Before any trial he was to face, he never wondered whether he would come out of it as a winner or defeated.  He was not considering this as a problem.  Also this time, that was the case.  He tried to fulfill his duty to God, the Church, and the people.  He did so as a free man, without succumbing to pressure from either the West or the East.  As always.  Perhaps that is why, thanks to his moral authority, his credibility, he has managed to keep away the ongoing war and thus protect the relationship between Islam and Christianity.

At a time when the world seemed to explode under the influence of tragic tensions, only he, a witness of peace, recalled that the course of history, the evolution of thought and, above all, religions herald, after all, are uninterrupted going to unity.  And, the phrase repeated by John Paul II throughout his pontificate – “The world can change!” – is perhaps the most precious legacy he could have left to a man of the 21st century …
