Easter was for him a “feast of feasts” and the Eucharist – “the sacrament of the sacraments”. Before breakfast we were making wishes to the Holy Father, kissed his hands and the Papal ring. And, we handed him white flowers. Such a symbolic devotion to his priestly ministry. Then, we had the Chrism Mass. And, the renewal of priestly promises. The Holy Father gave a homily and blessed the oils, which are then used to anoint those who receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, priesthood, and the sacrament of the sick. “This morning meeting” – he said one year – “is a special thanksgiving offered to God by all of us who, by virtue of the gift that is also a mystery, have a profound share in the priesthood of Christ.” On the occasion of this thanksgiving, he recalled the Sacrament of Penance, which “is profoundly linked to the Eucharist and makes us ministers of God’s mercy. He explained that only in this way – drawing from the source of forgiveness and reconciliation will priests be “authentic servants of Christ” radiating his peace and love. He himself was an authentic servant of Christ and infected millions of people in the world with His peace and love.
