John Paul II took seriously the Second Vatican Council’s stand on the universal “vocation” to holiness. During his pontificate he beatified 1,345 people and canonized 483 people. And yet this novelty, one of the largest, has often been criticized and undermined. There were talking about “inflation” or a “factory of saints.”
It was the Second Vatican Council that offered everyone a high level of daily Christian existence, and therefore anyone, really any person can become a saint, even leading a completely normal, modest life. I would like to remind you that Paul VI has already established simpler canonization procedures. It is undeniable that during the long-standing – we cannot forget that – pontificate of John Paul II, many saints and beatified people were proclaimed.
To those who criticized him, the Holy Father replied with a joke: “It is the fault of the Holy Spirit.” In fact, it wasn’t just a joke. The Church has become truly universal. The Good News has reached the farthest points of our globe, and the obvious Christian message has spread and began to bear fruit.
