He managed to take the hand of today’s man

Anyone can read the pontificate of John Paul II on the basis of personal beliefs and his/her own ideas.  But, it cannot be denied – and this is the fundamental reason that led me to bear this witness – that Karol Wojtyła managed to propose again the problem of God, at a time when God had somehow disappeared from the horizon of society.  Similarly, it cannot be denied that Karol Wojtyła managed to take the hand of today’s man, helping him to find traces of God in his own history, and thus to find the meaning of his own humanity in a world inclined to depreciating everything – people, values, feelings.

And, if Karol Wojtyła succeeded, it was because he always emphasized the primacy of God, but at the same time he always revealed a strong assumption about the condition and affairs of man.  He defended his dignity, his rights.  He respected him in his freedom. He emphasized his greatness, his “uniqueness”, because in man, in every man, Karol Wojtyła saw the image of God the Creator.
