John Paul II did not expect it. Of course, he believed that this system, in its social injustice and economic weakness, was doomed to collapse. However, the Soviet Union still had its territorial, political, military and nuclear power. Therefore, without considering himself a prophet – as he jokingly was saying – the Holy Father did not think that communism would be overthrown so quickly. And, that liberation process can be instant and bloodless. (…) The Holy Father regarded these events as one of the greatest revolutions in history. From the perspective of faith, he treated it as an intervention of God, as a grace. The fall of communism and the liberation of peoples from the yoke of Marxist totalitarianism were undoubtedly linked to the Fatima apparitions, to the entrustment of the world, and in particular to the entrustment of Russia, to our Mother of God, as requested by the Church and the Pope. “If they take my request, Russia will be converted and peace will prevail, if not, its mistakes will spread throughout the world” – it was written in the first two parts of the “secret.”
On March 25, 1984, on St. Peter’s Square, in front of a statue of Our Lady specially brought from Fatima, in spiritual union with all the Bishops of the world, John Paul II performed an act of entrustment to Mary. He did not name Russia but made clear reference to nations that “especially need it.”
This is how the desire of our Lady has been fulfilled. And it was then that the events leading to the collapse of the communist world began.
