As the Archbishop was leaving the residence, dark, gloomy cars followed him, which he greeted and even blessed. He called them “his guardian angels.” The driver of Cardinal Wojtyła, Józef Mucha, was perfectly able to deceive them. On one occasion, when the Archbishop was going to a meeting that he wanted to keep secret, he behaved like agent 007. Unexpectedly, he accelerated and squeezed his car between the column of cars, allowing the Cardinal to switch to another car. He continued to drive alone, pulling confused “guardians” behind him. This related not only to those years. “Big Brother” followed Karol Wojtyła even when, as the Pope, he came on a pastoral visit to his homeland. When the Holy Father was to meet with representatives of the opposition in Warsaw, he took similar precautions by inviting them to the garden of the Primate’s residence, where he stopped. In preparing the pilgrimage in 1983, it was long discussed whether the Holy Father could meet the leader of “Solidarity” Lech Walesa. In the end, General Jaruzelski agreed and a mountain shelter was chosen at the Chochołowska Hall, where a “well” equipped hall was prepared. The Holy Father went inside, looked around, but something clearly raised his doubts. He took Lech Walesa under his shoulder and went with him to the hallway, where they could talk safely.
