A free, independent, high-intellectual Church could face different ideologies, preserving the legacy of Christian culture, thanks to which Poland, even when erased from the map of Europe, retains its identity. And, it managed to survive. In these times, the “Weeks of Christian Culture” were organized, which Cardinal Wojtyła supported morally and financially. Similarly, as far as possible, he helped university lecturers, scientists, prominent people of culture and theatre who lost their jobs because they did not adhere to communist doctrine. By definition, the Metropolitan did not receive a curial salary, which was, moreover, symbolic. The offerings received from the hands of pastors and the copyright proceeds received for his publications were entirely devoted to various pastoral activities or to charitable purposes. He lived modestly and did not express any needs. He wore the same coat for years, donning additional lining in winter. This was the Marxist reality of the time. Every day they were fighting to save the Church and preserve religion. Every day they were fighting to save Poles and their homeland
With the consent of Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz – “Testimony”.
