He burst with laughter when he saw me with this turkey!

– My great intimacy with the Papal apartment has persisted throughout all the years of my work for John Paul II.  I remember that just after the introduction of martial law in Poland, I was returning from Argentina from one of the Salesian missions and I brought the Pope a traditional dessert delicacy – dulce de leche.  I brought him this treat upstairs to his apartment and gave it along with the expressions of unity from my Selesian confreres.  At that time, the Pope was very depressed by the situation in his homeland.

Another time, when I was returning from Padua to the Vatican, a friend of mine gave me a whole large turkey.  Well, right away I made a phone call and I asked Father Stanisław, and then Sister Tobiana, if I can bring them this meat, because it was a really big bird.  They said, “Of course.  When you will arrive, call that you are already here.”  I reached the Courtyard of Sixtus V, the gendarme called to inform Father Dziwisz, he sent me down the elevator, and I barely squeezed into it.  I got to the top; the elevator door opened in the apartment, and in front of it there was not a sister, but the Pope … He burst with laughter when he saw me with this turkey!
