The private Papal elevator was a link to my second home, which was the Papal apartment. At least that’s how I treated it. Very often I went upstairs, to the Holy Father, because he wanted to discuss many things personally. For example, he chose images for Christmas and Easter cards. I also discussed with him the content of the wishes. I always brought him the new Anuarrio Pontificio, or The Vatican Yearbook. The Pope was extremely attentive and had an amazing memory, he remembered all the details. I had a “hotline” with him practically every day. He was heavily involved in all the endeavors, and I asked myself when he found the time for it and how it happened that he had a head for all this.
