In fact, John Paul II accompanied me throughout my life. I met and married my wife while serving in the Vatican. We got married in 2001. After the ceremony, the Pope received us in a special private audience, just for us. I took my relatives and the family who came to our wedding to see him. My parents also attended an exceptional morning mass in a private chapel next to his apartment. Everyone in my home felt connected with John Paul II, among other things because I lived in the Vatican and served at his side.
It was a great privilege. Eighteen years, day after day, right next to him, to the one who had recently been made a saint. Often, we may not even realize it, but for us Swiss, the fact that we have the responsibility of serving the Pope and taking care of his safety is truly unique.
