The year 1981 was a powerful uprising of French society in the work “’Gwiazdka’ for Poles” – “Un Noël pour les Polonais”
The Christmas of 1981 was approaching, Parisians observing the situation at that time remembered that they also suffered hunger in the past just like Poles. Paris wanted to contribute to the fact that Poles do not celebrate Christmas in poverty and oblivion. Hence, the then Mayor Jacques Chirac, together with the Consul of Paris, appealed to the hearts of Parisians and asked them to bring gifts of basic necessities on Saturday, December 12, 1981, especially food, which after collection was to be sent straight to the Polish by plane and distributed on Christmas Eve.
When the next day, December 13, martial law was declared in Poland, a spontaneous uprising arose among Poles and French. To this uprising immediately joined also present members of our John Paul II Foundation Chapter in France – namely, Mr. Dr. Christine Edmund Tomkiewicz, Mr. Henryk Rogowski delegate of the PFJPII Association in France in the Main Board of FJPII in Rome, Mr. Florian Junosza Załuski, Vice President, Mrs. Christine Rogowska.
Already on December 14, French radios reported that only in Paris alone, 154 tons of various goods were collected – food, medicines, etc. and 500,000 francs. Many cities in the provinces joined this action. In total, more than 1,150 tons were harvested. Among those who brought the packages, the majority were working people, they often came with children, and a significant percentage of the donors were pensioners, about whom the Scriptures say that they gave a “widow’s penny”.
A huge support in the action provided the radio station Europe n.1 with the great commitment of Pierre Bellemare.
In the following days, a plane departed from Roissy Airport with a full load of food, basic necessities and with Mr. Bernard Billaud, Cabinet Director Jacques Chirac and Secretary Mr. Philippe Orengo on board.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Paris, together with the councilors of the city of Paris, visited all the mayors to personally thank the Parisians who were involved in the action to help Poles. Also the Polish Catholic Mission in France, headed by Monsignor Zbigniew Bernacki, and with the cooperation of Mr. Henryk Rogowski and Mr. Florian Junosz-Załuski, organized performances of Polish artists in individual town halls to thank the French for their great attitude. Polish folklore ensembles of the Paris region, the church choir, the KSMP ensemble from Paris, ‘Wici’ from Argenteuil, and other artists such as the pianist Marian Marczak and young Bernard Szczerba. Stanisław Gaczoł, Polish poet, recited French and Polish poems celebrating the love of freedom of the Polish nation.
After the end of the action in individual mayoralties, Rector Zbigniew Bernacki took in the premises of the Polish Catholic Mission members of artistic teams and representatives of the city of Paris with Mr. Bernard Billaud, director of the office of Mayor J. Chirac, to thank for the beautifully successful action for the benefit of Poles.
During December, the actions continued. Rector Zbigniew Bernacki asked Mr. Edmund Tomkiewicz to mobilize Polish doctors so that they could treat patients coming from Poland free of charge. About 12 doctors joined the action, accepting those in need on non-working days.
The coordinators of the Christmas for Poles together with the City Hall of Paris and its mayor Jacques Chirac, the Polish Catholic Mission in Paris with the Rector Zbigniew Bernacki, were Mr. Henryk Rogowski and Mr. Florian J. Załuski.

Ambassade de Pologne | Invitation soirée du 13 décembre 2021 à 18h00 – 40e anniversaire du lancement de l’action d’aide humanitaire à la Pologne en 1981-1982
Monsieur l’Ambassadeur,
En vous remerciant de votre attentionnée invitation à la soirée célébrant le 40ème anniversaire du lancement de la grande action d’aide humanitaire à la Pologne durant les évènements de 1981-1982, je suis au regret de vous informer ne pas pouvoir y participer compte tenu d’engagements professionnels au titre de mes fonctions de Conseiller d’Etat qui m’empêchent de pouvoir me rendre à Paris le 13 décembre.
Je suis d’autant plus navré de ce contretemps qu’ayant œuvré directement à la mise en place et à la concrétisation de cette aide humanitaire, sous l’autorité de Jacques Chirac, avec Bernard Billaud, à l’époque directeur de son Cabinet, j’en garde un souvenir poignant où se mêlent des images fortes :
- la figure de Mgr. Zbigniew Bernacki, alors recteur de la Mission Polonaise avec lequel nous avions beaucoup travaillé,
- Pierre Bellemare avec lequel Europe 1 avait assuré un écho national à notre campagne de dons,
- L’espace aérien polonais surveillé par des avions de combat qui suivirent nos deux avions cargos d’Air France jusqu’à son atterrissage à Varsovie,
- la présence de militaires en armes autour de nos avions une fois au sol,
- les négociations pour le déchargement de leurs cargaisons,
- l’arrivée de l’Ambassadeur de France,
- la traversée de Varsovie en état de siège,
- la surveillance de la bonne remise des dons à vos valeureux compatriotes,
- l’inoubliable visite à S.E. le Primat de Pologne, le Cardinal Jozef Glemp,
- le message de bonne réalisation envoyé au Maire de Paris depuis l’Ambassade de France, parmi tant d’autres qui me reviennent en mémoire et,
- par-dessus-tout, la fierté d’avoir contribué à marquer la solidarité de tant de gens de France avec un peuple courageux, épris de liberté, digne dans l’épreuve, fort de sa foi, riche de ses espérances dans l’avenir à l’heure sombre de l’état de guerre décrété quelques heures à peine avant notre arrivée…
Oui, j’aurai aimé pouvoir être des vôtres le 13 décembre. Je devrai hélas me contenter d’être en communion d’esprit avec vos invités mais soyez assuré, Monsieur l’Ambassadeur, que ce sera pour moi, un moment de joie – fût-ce à distance.
