The “New Evangelization”, which became one of the hallmarks of John Paul II’s pontificate, and it was evident, especially during apostolic journeys, that new blood, new life should be given to the Churches in the countries of “old” Christianity. This was mainly the case in Europe, a continent which was increasingly moving away from its roots, from its history and culture. It was necessary to return to the sources of faith in order to make the mission of evangelization dynamic and expressive again.
In addition to this task, which is a priority of the Church and of every Christian who is to evangelize where he lives, there was also the special attitude of Karol Wojtyła, which I would call “evangelical freshness”. He himself constantly sought personal spiritual renewal, and he did so by primarily reading the Gospel. Throughout his life, almost to the very end, he read the Scriptures every day. Hence, he radiated with his constant desire to proclaim the message of Christ and to strengthen the faith throughout the world.
All other areas of commitment, such as the work for peace and justice, were religious, spiritual, based on faith, in the Gospel. If this were not the case, the Church would be a great social center or an agency for international aid. One could say that the entire pontificate of John Paul II was the constant implementation of the provisions of the Vatican Council.
