All marked by great suffering

During his last stay in the Gemelli polyclinic, his state of health took on an almost mystical dimension – I would say.  At least that’s what it seemed to us, staying close to him.  However, there is no doubt that Karol Wojtyła was marked by the charism of suffering until the last days of his life.  The last Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.  The last Easter. The last blessing.  All marked by great suffering.

On the Resurrection Sunday, he came to the refectory to bless food in accordance with Polish tradition. After the blessing, he wanted to taste “blessed dishes”, but he could not.  You could see the pain on his face.  He was able to whisper, “And the Lord also deprived me of this.”  But immediately afterwards, subject to God’s will, he whispered, “Let Thy will be done.”
