He walked a few steps and slipped a piece of paper into the crevasse of the wall

Following in the footsteps of memories, I would like to recall one more gesture of the Holy Father. It was not a gesture for the media or for attracting attention, but a gesture that was the source of his deep faith. I’m talking about the Wailing Wall.

In a quiet voice, the Holy Father read a piece of paper in his hand. It was a request for forgiveness, with which he turned to the Jewish people. He had already read it once in St. Peter’s Basilica and wanted to bring it here. He walked a few steps and slipped a piece of paper into the crevasse of the wall.

I wondered what impression this image had on the Jews. I received a reply a few days later reading one of the newspapers. There was a statement from Elie Wiesel, a Jew who won the Nobel Peace Prize: “When I was a child, I was afraid to walk near the church. Now everything has changed…”.
