When someone was looking from the St. Peter’s Square to the Apostolic Palace, he/she was able to see on the third floor, on the edge on the right side, at the very top, the bedrooms of the Holy Father. Then, his office with the famous window, in which he was appearing during the Angelus prayer, and later our secretaries’ room. The door between our offices and the Pope’s office was almost always open. We were closing them when the Holy Father worked on his speeches and homilies. We didn’t want ringing phones to interfere with his work.
– What else did the priest surprise?
– That whom was John Paul II. I knew he was smart, good. But, being close, I was struck by his greatness and holiness. I saw a man uniquely related with God. I saw that everything he does, he entrusts to God. The Lord God was on the first place for him. Besides, he used every moment to pray.
– Was the priest surprised by that? After all, it is normal for the Pope to pray.
– It is true, but I must admit that I have never met a man who would pray so much!
