On John Paul II Foundation’s initiative, a Mass was offered for His Holiness Pope Benedict the XVI on the 5th anniversary of his election. Today, on Monday April 19, at the tomb of Pope John Paul II in Vatican Grottoes, priests and all gathered pilgrims offered the Mass and prayers for Pope Benedict XVI.
Exactly, on April 19th, 2005, two weeks after the Pope John Paul II death, Papal Conclave elected Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the 265th Pope. Pope Benedict XVI is the first German-born Pope after Pope Victor II (1055-57). Cardinal Ratzinger took the name Benedict XVI referring to his predecessor Benedict XV, named also as the “Pope of peace” and to St. Benedict of Nursia, patron saint of Europe and students.
